The "Opoka" Foundation has been founded by Polish Bishops Conference in order to co-ordinate all Internet activities in the environment of the Catholic Church in Poland. Our objectives are reached mainly through creating/maintaining an electronic mail system and editing the following internet services: |

I. History
In 1990's KAI (Catholic Information Agency) started organizing meetings devoted to computer technologies application. After some time this initiative was taken over by the Diocesan Curia in Gliwice, which organized two seminars "The Internet in the Catholic Church". During the second seminar "the initiative group" prepared a project concerning the Internet usage by the Catholic Church in Poland. In March 1998 this project was presented to the Polish Episcopate and a few months later they made a decision establishing the "Opoka" Foundation.
1992-1996
KAI organizes meetings on computer technologies application in the Catholic Church
Spring, Autumn 1997
Diocesan Curia in Gliwice organizes seminars "The Internet in the Catholic Church".
December 1997
"The initiative group" and Bishop Tadeusz Pieronek meet for the first time. Preliminary acceptance of the project.
March 1998
Presenting the "Opoka" project to the Polish Bishops' Conference, general acceptance.
June 1998
The Polish Bishops' Conference decision founding "Opoka" and constituting the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Board
July 1998
"Opoka" pays a visit to Vatican: meetings with John Paul II, Vatican Radio, L'Osservatore Romano, Year 2000 Committee , Vatican Internet Centre, Vatican Secretary of State..

The first "Opoka" server - Petrus - is set up and running

The official inauguration of our web site took place on March 9, 1999 at Galeria Porczyńskich. Krzysztof Zanusssi was the host of the ceremony was and the event was honoured with the presence of many VIPs from the Catholic Church, Government, Parliament, European Union, our Partners and sponsors.

In each diocese there is a "coordinator" responsible for our project. If someone wishes to use our internet services (e-mail, www pages, hardware and/or software) a coordinator is the "middleman" between the prospective user and "Opoka".
