Kościół i Unia Europejska

What is the European Union?

The European Union it is the union of countries that does not have its equivalent in history. In addition this project is developing all the time and soon we will be able to evaluate if it can become something comparable to the United States of America or stay as a loose union of countries.

The European Union is a result of integration processes that raised in Europe after dramatic experiences of Second World War but in our history we are able to find some examples when Europeans were trying to unify countries in one strong union. The Roman Empire was the first country that culture and history built foundation for cultural unity of Europe. The Roman achievements on fields of architecture, philosophy and civil law are still base for achievements of European nations. Also religion played a great role in the life of Europeans and their tries for unity of Europe were often caused by their religion. The values coming from the truth preached by Jesus are still very important moral aspect for European citizens. It seems to be very relevant to add that in the past the power of head of the catholic Church — a pope - has been accepted by almost each master in European countries.

The history of Europe is full of examples of trials to unify Europe ”under one flag” but the first successful steps were possible to conduct when people based them on the common values such as accepting individuality of each countries. The European Union is a new kind of union among countries. Its most important aim is to coordinate a co-operation among member countries and their citizens. The most important aims of the European Union written in treaties (a specific kind of European constitution) are: security, economical development, social development, protecting freedom, law and interests of citizens. The European Union accepts the individual character of each country: history, tradition and culture. According to European law, the European countries do not lose their independence — they only transfer parts of their rights to govern. The activity of European Union is an agreement of European countries that is based on common solidarity. All of those countries that decided to to become a part European Union also agreed to transfer parts of their competencies because only the common effort is a base for successful and common economical, social and cultural development. The European Union is an answer for threats that are raising from world globalization.
