Dear Prime Minister,

I have followed attentively the summit of the Heads of State and Government of the European Union which concluded yesterday in Brussels with the adoption of the constitutional treaty.

I should like today to express the sincere appreciation and gratitude of the Holy See as well as my own for the initiatives of Your Excellency and of the Polish Government, during the negotiations and during the recent summit meeting, in support of the inclusion of a reference to the Christian heritage in the preamble of the treaty. Even though the results fall short of what has been wished, it is important that this cause was promoted by some of the principal political leaders of the Union. I should like, therefore, to acknowledge your contribution, faithful to the values most deeply rooted in the history and the life of the people of Poland.

Szanowny Panie Premierze,

Z uwagą śledziłem szczyt Szefów Państw i Rządów Unii Europejskiej, który zakończył się wczoraj w Brukseli przyjęciem Traktatu Konstytucyjnego.

Chciałbym dziś przekazać wyrazy szczerego uznania i wdzięczności Stolicy Apostolskiej, jak też moje osobiste, za inicjatywy Waszej Ekscelencji i Rządu Polskiego podczas negocjacji i w czasie ostatniego spotkania na szczycie, stanowiące poparcie dla włączenia odniesienia do chrześcijańskiego dziedzictwa w Preambule Traktatu. Chociaż efekt końcowy jest niezupełnie taki, jakiego pragnęliśmy, ważne jest, że za sprawą tą opowiadali się niektórzy główni przywódcy polityczni Unii. Dlatego też chciałbym podziękować za Pański wkład, będący wyrazem wierności wartościom najgłębiej zakorzenionym w historii i życiu narodu Polskiego.
